Fresher Food
Because you buy direct from the grower, the fresh produce will have been
harvested much more recently - often in the past 24 hours - so it keeps
much longer.
Better Prices
A recent survey showed that fresh fruit and vegetables from Farmers
Markets in the South West are up to 50% cheaper than the equivalent
product in the local supermarket.
More Variety
Because our producers often specialise in rare breeds and unusual
and traditional varieties, you get more choice. You may meet growers
with 12 different varieties of plums, and 20 varieties of apples.
And farmers with Old Gloucester Cattle and Gloucester Old Spot
Pigs.
More Choice
We have over 100 different farmers and food producers selling at
our farmers markets, with new stallholders joining
all the time. You can choose from conventionally grown to organic
certified produce, from allotment holders to large-scale farmers.
And you can get to know the people who grow your food.
Tastier Food
"Food like it used to taste" - that's the way our customers
have described produce from our markets. You'll be amazed
at the
difference.
Reduced Food Miles
Because we don't use packing and distribution plants hundreds of
miles away, and because our stallholders are local, your food travels
a considerable distance less from gate to plate. The majority of
stallholders at Fresh-n-Local Farmers' Markets live within
30 miles of the market. Many live just a few miles away.
Reduced Packaging
Much of the produce on sale is sold loose, rather than being pre-packed
in expensive and wasteful plastic packaging.
Keeping Town Centres Alive
Surveys in Gloucestershire have shown that local retailers benefit
from having a farmers market nearby - so town centres start to
thrive again.*
Healthy Living
By eating more fresh fruit and veg, you stand a better chance of
escaping heart disease and cancer (govt. report, 2001)
*SDC Footfall Report Oct 2000 showed 10,000 extra people came into
town on farmers market day compared to the previous Saturday.
