We have worked in various ways to look at improving school lunches at a number of schools, none of which have involved shouting at the dinner ladies!
We believe that children need more information in order to make healthier choices and we have found that children really enjoy our tasting sessions of fresh fruits and vegetables. We talk about "tasty options" rather than "healthy options" and would prefer to see a Whole School Approach adopted before the dinners are changed, the desire for change coming from the customers themselves - the children. We believe that the dining area should be smart and appealing, and that the food should be fresh and tasty, as well as nutritious, of course.
We support the re-skilling of kitchen staff, the re-equipping of kitchens and the use of locally sourced raw ingredients for food cooked from scratch.
Following a conference on procuring local food for school dinners in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire there are now pilot schemes running through the Wye Valley AONB - click here for more info
